Il cronografo è un cronometro in grado di misurare il tempo a partire da un esatto istante. I primi cronografi erano usati dai medici per misurare il battito cardiaco sulla base di 60 pulsazioni. Mentre i cronografi militari, dotati di scala telemetrica, erano usati per calcolare la distanza percorsa dai proiettili sparati dall’artiglieria sulla base della differenza tra momento dello sparo seguito dal rumore dell’esplosione. Impiegati poi per misurare la produzione oraria di qualsiasi attività manifatturiera. Partendo dai dati unitari, il totale dei pezzi al secondo, il totale dei pezzi al minuto il totale dei pezzi all’ora, si poteva stabilire il quantitativo esatto della produzione di un operaio, di un gruppo di operai o di un intero reparto.
